Second-Grade Math Curriculum Overview

This curriculum aims to deepen students' understanding of number sense, introduce concepts of geometry and measurement, and enhance their problem-solving and reasoning skills. Activities encourage exploration and practical application of mathematical concepts in engaging ways.

Unit 1: Place Value and Number Sense

  • Objective: Understand three-digit numbers and place value up to 1,000.

  • Activities: Use base-ten blocks and number charts to build and decompose numbers; practice reading and writing numbers in various forms.

  • Standards: 2.NBT.1, 2.NBT.3

Unit 2: Addition and Subtraction within 1,000

  • Objective: Perform addition and subtraction of numbers up to 1,000 using various strategies.

  • Activities: Use models, drawings, and strategies such as the relationship between addition and subtraction, regrouping, and decomposing numbers.

  • Standards: 2.NBT.5, 2.NBT.7, 2.NBT.9

Unit 3: Introduction to Multiplication

  • Objective: Introduce the concept of multiplication as an efficient way of adding equal groups.

  • Activities: Use repeated addition, arrays, and equal grouping with manipulatives to solve simple multiplication problems.

Unit 4: Understanding Money and Time

  • Objective: Understand and use money and time; learn to solve simple problems involving these concepts.

  • Activities: Identify coins and bills; make change; read clocks and calculate elapsed time; real-life scenarios like setting up a store or planning a schedule.

Unit 5: Geometry and Spatial Sense

  • Objective: Recognize and categorize geometric shapes based on their properties.

  • Activities: Explore and build various shapes using manipulatives; solve puzzles involving shapes; understand symmetry.

Unit 6: Measuring Length and Data

  • Objective: Measure and estimate lengths in standard units; introduce concepts of data collection and interpretation.

  • Activities: Use rulers and other measurement tools; conduct simple experiments and record results using charts and graphs.
